There are times when you don't have severe stomach pain, but you feel nauseous all day and lose your appetite at the sight of food. It's easy to dismiss this as just a matter of your condition.

If it doesn't subside after a few days, or if your food intake decreases noticeably, then it's worth looking into. This symptom can arise not only from the stomach but also from medications you are taking or your overall systemic condition.

When it originates from the stomach

Nausea is a common reaction when the gastrointestinal tract is irritated. If you have gastritis or an ulcer, you may experience heartburn or discomfort in the pit of your stomach along with a loss of appetite.

If stomach acid rises into the esophagus, you may also experience a sour taste or a feeling of something stuck in your throat. However, it is not always a stomach problem. The same symptoms can also appear due to infections, migraines, or medication side effects, so we consider when the symptoms started and any recent changes in your physical condition.

Cases that should not be overlooked

If a lack of appetite continues, food intake decreases, and weight loss follows. If you are continuously losing weight without dieting, or if you feel full quickly after eating only a little, it is advisable not to view it as a simple loss of appetite.

If you are repeatedly vomiting, experiencing severe pain in the pit of your stomach, having difficulty swallowing, or if you have black stools or anemia, you should check for other problems in your digestive system.

Order of examination

We first check when the symptoms started, whether they are worse on an empty stomach or after meals, and if abdominal pain or heartburn accompanies them. If necessary, a blood test can be performed to check for anemia, liver and kidney function, and inflammation markers.

If a stomach issue is suspected, a gastroscopy is used to directly examine the mucous membranes of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Depending on the symptoms, an abdominal ultrasound may also be added. It is important to choose only the necessary tests based on the symptoms you are currently experiencing.

Not eating is not the answer

It's easy to think that it's better to starve if you feel uncomfortable. However, prolonged fasting can lead to a decrease in physical strength and nutrition, delaying recovery.

It is advisable to eat small, frequent portions of easily digestible foods, and to avoid greasy or irritating foods and alcohol. If you are experiencing vomiting, preventing dehydration by drinking small, frequent sips of water is the priority.
