You may have experienced a sour taste rising to your throat or a burning sensation in your chest after a meal. If it happens only once after eating something greasy or eating late, you can attribute it to that meal.

The problem arises when it becomes repetitive. If the same thing happens several times a week, and you feel like something is caught in your throat or your chest burns, then you should investigate whether it's an issue of stomach acid rising.

Why Does It Come Up Backwards?

There is a muscle between the esophagus and the stomach that acts like a valve. It should only open when food goes down and remain closed otherwise. If this valve loosens, the contents of the stomach can flow back into the esophagus.

Overeating, late-night meals, lying down immediately after eating, greasy foods, and alcohol can all loosen this valve. Clothes that constrict the abdomen or increased weight also contribute to this. If you identify when your symptoms worsen, you can often pinpoint the cause.

It's Not Just Your Chest Burning

When you think of reflux, it's easy to only imagine heartburn. In reality, it manifests differently for each person. Some individuals may experience frequent burping, a feeling of something caught in their throat, or a dry cough as their main symptoms.

Due to the characteristic of worsening when lying down, it can cause you to wake up at night or in the early morning, or start with discomfort in the throat in the morning. However, these symptoms can also appear in other conditions, so you cannot make a definitive diagnosis based on symptoms alone.

What Happens If You Delay

Repeated exposure to stomach acid can cause inflammation and damage to the esophageal lining. What initially started as mild burning can eventually make eating and sleeping uncomfortable.

Especially if you find it difficult or painful to swallow, frequently vomit, lose weight, or notice black stools, you should not delay and seek to identify the cause.

When to Consider an Endoscopy

A gastroscopy allows direct visual examination of the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It can identify structural problems such as reflux esophagitis, gastritis, or ulcers.

If symptoms persist for a long time or do not improve even after lifestyle changes, it may be time to consider an examination. Other gastrointestinal diseases that produce similar symptoms can also be screened out. The timing is determined by considering how long the symptoms have lasted, age, and family history.

Things to Take Care of in Daily Life

Eating regularly in smaller portions rather than large meals at once, and not lying down immediately after eating, can make a difference. Reducing late-night meals and excessive alcohol consumption, and identifying which foods specifically trigger your symptoms, will make management easier.
