It's a staircase I used to climb without a care, but these days, even climbing one floor makes me catch my breath.

It used to be that I could climb stairs without a second thought, but these days, I find myself catching my breath after just one flight. Sometimes, I even have to stop after walking a little faster on flat ground.

It's easy to dismiss this as a lack of exercise, but if you notice a clear difference compared to before, it's worth looking into. Shortness of breath isn't just a lung issue; it can also stem from the heart and blood.

Lungs and Bronchi

This is often the first area that comes to mind. If you have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or pneumonia, the process of taking in oxygen itself becomes difficult.

If you have a persistent cough or phlegm, wheezing when you breathe, and your symptoms worsen particularly after activity, then this area should be considered. If you have been a long-term smoker, changes in lung function can lead to noticeable shortness of breath during activity.

Heart

For oxygen to circulate throughout the body, the lungs alone are not enough; the heart must pump effectively. If the heart's pumping function declines, it may not be able to send enough blood, leading to easy shortness of breath and fatigue.

If you experience palpitations, chest pain that feels like tightness, or swelling in your ankles or legs, it's advisable to check your cardiovascular system. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or dyslipidemia, it's best not to take changes in shortness of breath lightly.

When There Isn't Enough Blood

Even if your lungs and heart are healthy, you may experience shortness of breath with minimal activity if you have anemia. This is because if there isn't enough hemoglobin to carry oxygen, even if you breathe in well, the oxygen won't be delivered effectively.

If shortness of breath is accompanied by dizziness, headaches, palpitations, lack of energy, and a pale face, then this could be the cause. If your food intake has significantly decreased recently, you've experienced bleeding, or you've been diagnosed with anemia during a check-up, a blood test can confirm this.

When and How You Experience Shortness of Breath Is Important

Even with the same shortness of breath, the area to investigate can vary depending on the situation. It differs whether it only occurs during movement, even when you're still, or if it worsens when you lie down.

Along with a physical examination, necessary tests such as blood tests, chest X-rays, electrocardiograms, and lung function tests may be selected. However, if you suddenly experience severe difficulty breathing, severe chest pain and cold sweats, or feel like you might lose consciousness, it could be an emergency, so you should not delay seeking help.
