Hello, this is Sungmo Best Internal Medicine, performing pre-employment health screenings in Siheung. Recently, a young person in their 20s visited us for their final pre-employment health screening after passing a civil service exam they had prepared for a long time. It was truly heartwarming to see them on the verge of receiving the reward for their diligent efforts.
As many people come for screenings right before their final acceptance, we have compiled frequently asked questions and answers to help ensure that no one is unfairly disadvantaged due to a lack of information.
Q1. What kind of examination is a pre-employment health screening?

It is a health screening to confirm that a new employee is in a healthy enough condition to perform the duties of a company or organization without difficulty. It checks the current physical and mental health, as well as the presence of chronic or infectious diseases. From the company's perspective, it is a procedure to identify, prevent, and manage an applicant's health issues in advance.
Pre-employment health screenings are broadly divided into two types:
- General pre-employment health screening: This is not a mandatory examination, so some companies may not require it.
- Civil servant pre-employment health screening: This is a mandatory examination for those awaiting appointment to national positions, experienced positions, administrative agencies, judges, and special experienced positions.
If abnormal findings are detected in the screening results, a secondary examination may follow to identify the cause.
Q2. What are the examination items?

| Item | What is checked |
|---|---|
| Physical examination | Overall physical condition, including height, weight, blood pressure |
| Blood test | Liver function through liver enzyme levels, kidney function through creatinine and urea, diabetes through blood sugar, hyperlipidemia through cholesterol levels |
| Urine test | Kidney disease and diabetes are determined by protein, sugar, and blood, and information on medications being taken is also checked |
| Chest X-RAY | Presence of lung disease |
| Vision, hearing test | Important items for occupations requiring driving or operating machinery |
The basic items are as listed above, and additional tests may be included depending on the institution or the applied position. If you check the examination procedure in advance through the Examination Guide, the day of the examination will be much smoother.
Q3. Can I fail due to a pre-employment health screening?

While not common, there are occasional cases of disqualification for reasons such as those listed below:
- Infectious diseases: Hepatitis B, tuberculosis, etc.
- Chronic diseases: High blood pressure, diabetes, etc.
- Physical defects: Problems with vision, hearing, etc.
- Mental disorders: Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, panic disorder, etc.
However, please note that the decision of disqualification is made by the institution responsible for recruitment, so the above information should only be used as a reference. If you are curious about the exact criteria, it is faster to inquire directly with the relevant institution.
Q4. Do I need to fast before the examination?

Yes. Just as you fast for at least 8 hours before a national health screening, you should also fast for the same duration before a pre-employment health screening. Please remember this preparation is for more accurate blood test results.
